Wood-Block Engraved Prints
The Petersburg Museum of Technology has a collection of wood-block engraved prints
on display dating back to the civil war. These original prints were
published in the Harpers Weekly Newspaper during the war. Artist attended
many of the battles in the field and submitted their sketches for printing .
Photography was expensive and reproduction technology had not been developed
during this period of time. Newspapers relied on engravers to transfer
these sketches to blocks of wood for mass printing. The Art of Wood
